STEP 1 What is a Resume?

  • Personal job hunting tool to get you a job interview
  • Written summary of who you are, what you have done, your education, your skills and your abilities
 

STEP 2 What's in? What's out?

What's In:

Name, address, phone number, work history, skills, hobbies, education, training, volunteer work, type of work you're looking for

What's out:

Social Insurance number; age; health or disability information; citizenship, religious/political affiliations; height / weight; marital status, your picture

 

STEP 3 Parts of a Resume

Contact Information

  • Include your Name, Address, Telephone #, Message #, E-mail address

Job Objective

  • Employers read resumes to answer the question : What can this person do for us? 
  • Be as specific as possible about the employment position you want and how you can benefit the employer

Highlights of Qualifications / Profile / Summary

  • A bulleted list of your most relevant skills or personal qualities as related to the job objective

Employment History / Work History

  • List your job title, employer and main responsibilities of each job
  • You can list the time spent at each job in total years (3 years) or actual dates, year-to-year format (2005-2008)

Education & Training

  • List diplomas, degrees, certificates and other training, including locations and dates

Volunteer Experience / Community Involvement

  • Be sure to include the organization name and job titles of your volunteer placements

Hobbies & Interests

  • An optional section, use this if your interests show skills and abilities related to the job you are applying for

References

  • Professional and Characteristic /Personal references are listed on a separate page, to be given to the employer when asked for
 

STEP 4 Handing out your resume

Decide on your target position and audience

  • Include type of industry /organization, size of employer, function, title, responsibilities
  • Clearly state to your audience how you can help them

Define your accomplishments & activities

  • Check that your accomplishments are relevant to the targeted position
  • Group your accomplishments - putting most significant accomplishments first
  • Refer to list of action words for suggested ideas

STEP 5 An Effective Resume

  • Highlights your skills, experiences and personal traits as they relate to the job you are applying for
  • Focuses on achievements and accomplishments - not just the job duties or descriptions
 

STEP 6 Different Resume Styles - CHRONOLOGICAL

  • Chronological resumes organize your work history by date, listing your current or most recent job first
  • You have worked in your chosen field for some time and you want to call attention to a stable work history
  • You want to call attention to consistent upward mobility promotions in your career
  • You are applying for a job in a conservative field where a traditional format is expected
  • You think the employer would be more comfortable with a traditional resume
  • You like the straight forward look of a chronological resume
  • Make sure you don't list only your job responsibilities, instead show what you have accomplished at each position

DOs

  • Make it visually appealing
  • Be brief and to the point - use point form and bullets
  • Use good quality paper
  • Type, spell check and have someone else proof-read
  • Make sure your resume is a maximum of two pages
  • Make sure your name and phone number are on both pages
  • Use action words
  • Use past tense and make sure this is consistent throughout
  • Use quantities, amounts and dollar values to enhance descriptions
  • Tailor your resume to the specific job you are applying for
  • Save your resume on disk for easy changes

DONTs

  • Use obvious titles on the resume
  • Lie or over-embellish information
  • Include salary expectations
  • Hand write changes
  • Use include pictures of yourself
  • List reasons why you left previous jobs
  • Date or sign your resume
  • Use the pronoun "I"
  • List references
 

STEP 13 Resume Checklist

OVERALL APPEARANCE AND LAYOUT

  • Is your resume easy to read with enough white space (does it look "uncluttered")?
  • Can you scan down the page(s) and see a pattern in the placement of headings and text?
  • Is the wording positive and action-oriented throughout?
  • Does it look professional and business-like with no handwriting?
  • Is it free of spelling and grammar errors?
  • At a glance, do key ideas and words pop out to support the job objective?
  • Has unrelated information been eliminated, and is the length two pages maximum?

FOCUS: JOB OBJECTIVE

  • Is a Job Objective included?
  • Is it directly related to the job being applied for?
  • Is it phrased in the appropriate language of the industry?
  • Is it a realistic next step for you?

SKILLS OR QUALIFICATIONS SUMMARY

  • Does the Summary contain skills that are consistent with the Job Objective?
  • If a Summary is not included, does the most recent job listed in the resume describe the skills that you would like to use in your next job?
  • Is the Summary positive, interesting and "alive"?
  • Does the Summary combine Hard Skills and Soft Skills?

BODY OF RESUME

  • Do you sound real, personable, energetic, and unique?
  • Did you include information that supports your work values and professionalism?
  • Did you use bulleted points rather than long paragraphs?
  • Accomplishment statements - measurable and specific (use numbers/percentages/dollar values/decreases-increases, etc.)
  • Is the information relevant to the Job Objective and showing a wide range of experience?
  • Can job titles be easily found by someone scanning the resume?
  • Are work experiences presented in reverse chronological order (most recent work first)?

VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE / COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

  • Did you include organization names and job titles?
  • Are major skills and accomplishments related to the Job Objective highlighted? (In a Functional resume format, they may be listed under the Skills Summary area)

HOBBIES AND INTERESTS

  • If this section is included, do the activities have some relevance to the job? (i.e. skills, accomplishments)
  • Is it positioned at the end of the resume?

REFERENCES

  • If you have references to use, does the resume indicate that references are Available upon request
