A Dynamic Cover Letter - Creating a strong and favourable first impression can go along way in a successful job search. A cover letter and resume are sometimes your only opportunity to meet  a potential employer. Therefore, being positive and ensuring you have taken the time to research the company and learn the name of the Hiring Manager, will help to show initiative and your interest in the job you are applying for.

STEP 1 What is a Cover Letter?

  • An introduction to yourself, your skills and your desire to work for that company
  • Explains why you are sending a resume and summarizes the parts of your resume you wish to bring to the employer's attention
  • A chance to show your writing style and little of your own personality
 

STEP 2 What's in? What's out?

What's In:

Name, address, phone number, how you heard about the job, what the position is you are applying for, highlight relevant experiences, skills, education or training for the position sought, employers contact information, reference to your enclosed resume, date

What's out:

Social Insurance number; age; health or disability information; citizenship, religious/political affiliations; height / weight; marital or family status

 

STEP 3 Parts of a Cover Letter

Personal Contact Information

Your name, address and phone number should always appear at the top of the page

Date

Date you are mailing or submitting your application

Employer Contact Information

Company name and address

Personalized Salutation

  • Cover letters should always be addressed to the individual responsible for hiring for the job you are applying for
  • If a first name basis was established through a previous conversation, you could use "Dear Sue"
  • If you are unable to identify the reader then address your letter to the Human Resources Department or Hiring Manager

Body of a Cover Letter

First Paragraph - Why You Are Writing

  • Opening statement should be strong to capture the employer s interest
  • Reference the source of the job lead, including date of ad, position title, any file or job order #

Second Paragraph - What You Have To Offer

  • Specify how your qualifications match specific job requirements found in the job advertisement

Third Paragraph - Why This Company

  • Explain briefly why you are interested in working for the employer/organization
  • Demonstrate knowledge about the company

Final Paragraph - Follow-Up

  • Indicate you look forward to having a personal interview and state phone number where you can be reached

Closing Signature

  • State your availability for further contact
  • Ask for an interview and express appreciation for the reader s consideration
  • Always sign your cover letters
 

STEP 4 Tips for Writing An Effective Cover Letter

  • Research the company and the position, your knowledge will show through in your cover letter
  • Be focused
  • Use specific examples
  • Be concise
  • Show enthusiasm and honesty
  • Mention a mutual fiend or contact if applicable
  • Initiate follow-up
  • Cover letters should always be typed unless specifically asked to be hand-written
  • Double and triple check for spelling and grammar errors
  • Make sure your letter is pleasingly positioned on the page (centered)
  • Align the letter to the left side of the page
  • Always sign your cover letters
